TB:visit

Yesterday evening 8 of us had the privilege of visiting two gardens in the
Stockton area, Tom and Jean Burns, and Elsiemae Nicholson. Both gardens
have been in the same location since 195, just a block apart, so the area
was a sight to behold. Burns garden has iris in rows, both named and
future introductions. Tom has captured the art of getting wonderful scent
in his. They also have a bamboo forest that you can get lost in, some
several inch's in diameter, some very black and all totally uncontrolled.
In Elsiemae's garden the iris were both in rows and incorporated in flower
beds with antique roses. They were very healthy looking, with name stakes
all in order, very easy to read. Elsiemae is a woman who lets you know
which she considers worth growing and which she would NOT have in her
garden. Some of the roses were planted in the early "50's" and the
fragrance was almost overpowering. They made a wonderful backdrop for the
iris. Both growers were wonderful hosts and we were invited back again
this year. If we can't make it we are looking forward to next year
already. Lorraine (not relation to Elsiemae)
