I couldn't agree more. I, too, have reached the conclusion that
virtually any sort of stress can leave susceptible irises vulnerable to
erwinia infection. I am also of the opinion that erwinia bacteria is
endemic in many soils, though I could certainly be wrong about that. It
sure seems to be widespread in mine, just waiting for hapless iris
victims to leave themselves open to invasion.
I'm certain there are many things I could do differently to reduce
stresses on my irises, but that's not my goal. My long-term plan is to
establish a reasonably maintained but non-coddled iris garden of tough
cultivars capable of withstanding the worst my growing conditions can
inflict upon them. To that end, this year has made tremendous progress
in weeding out the weaklings and identifying those cultivars worthy of
space in my beds.
