This is just my 2 cents worth -- even though you had a lot of rain, I think
that's the key, "rain" water. I believe fungus, mold, bacteria cannot thrive
in a low pH such as acid rain.the combination of good soil, good drainage,
rainwater and sunshine (those months are when the sun is closest to the
earth).
The insy binsy spider went up the water spout. Down came the rain and washed
the spider out. Out came the sun and washed the spider out and (dried up all
the rot) and the insy- binsy
