Jan,

Your hypothesis is close if not exactly tight on the money. "Barbados" is
Spanish for "(island of the) Bearded (men)". I am sure that the use of the
term "Barbudo" on the label is meant to imply "Bearded" iris, though what
language it represents, if any, I cannot say. The correct Spanish word
would be "barbado"; Latin would be "barbata".
