Chamomile daisy self sows in the droughty gravelly areas of my iris rows
- it's in several of the photos I've posted. It has feathery foliage
and doesn't cause problems for the irises, but I'm not sure how much
protection from sun it would give. It is recommended as a xeriscape
plant.
The yellow & orange cosmos (Bright Lights, Diablo etc) also self sow and
seem fairly drought & heat tolerant, plus bloom all summer here. And
have feathery foliage. This year, with all the rain, the plants are a
robust to suit me as a tall iris companion. I don't know how they do in
the southwest - even in a dry year, we have a lot of humidity and
occasional rains during hot weather, plus it rarely reaches temperatures
higher than 100oF here. The purple/white/pink cosmos do NOT tolerate my
erratic moisture conditions.
Calliopsis is another xeriscape summer annual that might work.
