Anne-Lisa, you are right in understanding I meant a trough or trench beside
the plant where roots could reach the rich medium, but the rhizome remained
above and out of it.
The only place I had trouble was in the lowest row where nutrients had leached
from rows above. I had one loss and two near losses out of quite a number of
plants, all of which are now growing very well.
In your climate, you are right about the soil being rich--and it is also cold,
so different requirements are to be expected in your area than what works here
in the southern US where soil temps are higher by quite a bit--and freeze near
the surface for only a short few weeks in the coldest part of the winter.
The two best equiped to answer your question would be Chuck Chapman in Ontario
and Chris Darlington in Quebec who may have conditions more like yours than
Chuck's. Chris's area is north of yours, and he seems to grow some varieties
very well. Both are on this list I believe. If he has not responded in a few
days, I will send him a note privately asking him your question. It is a good
one.
Others have conditions that are borderline zones 3/4 is in northern central
Minnesota. The conditions there may be quite different from yours. The
medians thrive, the TB's do not. That does not sound like Quebec.
Some folks in northern NH or VT may be very helpful as well.
