Re: RE: Cult-Colder climates

Chuck,
We moved two years ago to a sandy loam soil. When I dug iris this year,
some rhizomes were 0.5-1 inch deep because of soil washed to lower spots
with all the rain. To my surprise many mother rhizomes had increases as
well as this years growth. Maybe this is normal for virgin soil, but I
wondered at the time if the depth of the soil had encouraged this growth. I
have heard before that mother rhizomes could be planted by themselves a
little deeper to get new growth when none was evident.
The soil does drain well and I found some but little rot going on.

| I have been planting aa bit deeper then recomended and suggesting that my
colder zone custonmers do the same. I seems to help except were soil is wet.
| Better survival, less heaving etc. About 1/2 to 1" of soil over backs od
rhizome. Sometimes it is even deeper.
