RE: CULT: Parts of the iris rhizome

Since there is no formal authority, all the words like "front" and "back"
can vary from person to person. Personally I use "front" for the growing end
that contains the leaf fan. To me the entire bloomed rhizome without any
green fans is the "toe" or "mother" rhizome. "bottom" is the part with roots
as this is the lowest area. "Top" is the opposite of the bottom. My
"top/bottom" is the same as Laurie's. The other two definitions are
significantly different.

Subject: [iris] CULT: Parts of the iris rhizome

Hmm. I'm still confused, and this confusion is leading me to prepare to
take pics of my rzs and create a "parts of the rhizome" diagram much as I
did a "parts of the iris flower" for my website. So, let's see if I can
get this straight. Please, anyone and everyone, feel free to correct me
if I am misunderstanding the terminology.

TOP - portion of rhizome traditionally planted parallel to and level with
the soil surface - directly opposite the bottom from which the roots grow

BOTTOM - underside of rhizome from which the roots grow downward

BACK - portion of rhizome from which the primary fan of leaves grows -
also referred to as the HEEL

HEEL - same as BACK

FRONT - end of rhizome farthest from the BACK

TOE - same as FRONT

INCREASES - small rhizomes, each with its own fan of leaves, growing from
the sides of the original rhizome

TOES (not to be confused with TOE) - the beginning stages of INCREASES
that have not yet grown enough to sprout leaves

What have I left out/gotten wrong?

Laurie
