Greetings,
My name is Mike, and I am posting to you from Myrtle Beach (upper coastal)
South Carolina. I discovered your listserv, and though I am very new at growing
irises and will probably ask you a lot of dumb questions, I wanted to
subscribe and did so a few days ago. I am already finding the reading of the messages
quite interesting.
My mother lives in central Alabama, and since they are about to build a new
driveway over her TB iris bed of four or so years, I helped dig a new bed and
replant her irises when I was on a visit there two weeks ago. The plants were
very healthy and vigorous and had numerous new rhizomes (I believe that the
plants were planted there in 2000). Her pics of them blooming this year were
quite stunning. While I realize it is hot there now, this was my only chance to
help her since I won't be back there before November. The temps there are cooler
than usual, and so I am hoping that the transplanted iris and the nine new
plants I bought her and set out will do well. They are in a raised bed with
excellent dirt and drainage, and they get lots of sunlight all through the morning
and early afternoon.
Now for my current dilemma for which I seek your advice: I took nine of my
mom's healthy rhizomes back here to SC and transplanted them when I returned. I
returned from work just a while ago, though, and upon inspecting them I was
aghast at what appears to be some kind of insect damage. The best way to
describe this to you is to imagine an apple with one single bite in it. 5 of the
rhizomes have little "scoops" within them. These scoops are almost perfectly
rounded, and they are small and easily visible on the rhizomes. I see no bugs
around, but I assume that there are live culprits involved. If you know what is
wrong, and what I should do, please let me know!!
Finally, I hope to learn a great deal from your words of experience, and so I
thank you for creating this forum.
Mike in MB
