RE: CULT: Farmer's Almanac Predicts Wild Winter

Down here, we always predicted the weather by the coat on my old mare.  When
she started "shagging" up early in the season the winter was going to be
cold and hard.  "Star" never missed <G>.  Anybody out there still have
horses?

Always wondered about that woolybear folklore.  Seems to me like the
coloring would have more to do with the conditions while the wooybear was
actually growing than with conditions in the future, but them I'm always
looking at things in an "I'll believe it when I see it" sort of way.

We don't have the banded type of woolybears here, but we have another
woolybear - the SaltMarsh Caterpillar - that is more grizzled in coloring
but that varies from pale near white or yellowish through shades of brown
and reddish to almost black, and I have noticed that some years most are
dark and other years most are light.  Never thought to see how or even if
it relates to weather patterns.  Some years there are millions of them,
this year I didn't see a single caterpillar (one adult moth came to the
light a while back), that probably relates partly to weather too.  By the
way, they really like Iris, and strip them bare when the are common (maybe
they should be "woolybares"?).
