Cult: Deer repellent

Three years ago I planted a peach tree in the midst of my mountain iris
garden near Prescott. I hoped it would grow to give shade where I could sit
and enjoy my irises. The garden is surrounded by a six foot fence, and I
have never seen deer tracks inside it, but something kept eating all the new
sprigs off the little peach tree. The same something killed a grapevine I
tried to grow on the fence by eating every single green leaf. I've never
figured out what it was, possibly a squirrel. This spring I saw that the
poor tree wasn't going to survive if I didn't find some way to protect it.
I sprayed it with a product called Hot Pepper Wax. No more eating! I found
the Hot Pepper Wax in the garage, several years old and I can't find any
more.

I have used Liquid Fence since then, but I'm afraid the rain washes it off,
(It does rain up there sometimes.) and the smell is so bad I don't like to
go in the garden myself after I have used it.
