Re: Cult: Deer repellent

Thanks again to all of you who have suggested various means, better or worse, of banishing Bambi. By a curious coincidence, my doctor brought up the subject while I was in for my physical today. He recently bought a gizmo called Scarecrow on the internet. And, he said, "It works -- I've watched it." You hook the thing up to your hose and engage it at night, when the deer's visit is anticipated. Its sensor picks up the motion and squirts water, frightening off the deer. He says he bought it for about $65 on a site called Yardiac.com, which he wrote out for me on a prescription slip. I was tempted to ask him if that was "Yardiac" as in "yardiac arrest", but thought better of it. -- Griff

Subject: [iris] Cult: Deer repellent

Three years ago I planted a peach tree in the midst of my mountain iris
garden near Prescott. I hoped it would grow to give shade where I could sit
and enjoy my irises. The garden is surrounded by a six foot fence, and I
have never seen deer tracks inside it, but something kept eating all the new
sprigs off the little peach tree. The same something killed a grapevine I
tried to grow on the fence by eating every single green leaf. I've never
figured out what it was, possibly a squirrel. This spring I saw that the
poor tree wasn't going to survive if I didn't find some way to protect it.
I sprayed it with a product called Hot Pepper Wax. No more eating! I found
the Hot Pepper Wax in the garage, several years old and I can't find any
more.

I have used Liquid Fence since then, but I'm afraid the rain washes it off,
(It does rain up there sometimes.) and the smell is so bad I don't like to
go in the garden myself after I have used it.
