Hello Group.
I've just joined this list and am very new to irises, but the few I have seem to be fairly safe from the marauding deer, so I've torn up half my yard and am busily transplanting things from the outermost areas and setting up beds for the too many iris I've ordered. I'll really regret this when they all arrive later this month. I live just north of Spokane, WA, Zone 5 something. I need to figure it all out.
When Francelle mentioned the Hot Pepper Wax, it sounded pretty good, so I googled it. It must be REALLY good because the first site I looked at had it, but they can't ship it to 35 states! (Arizona and WA are just 2 of them.) I did feel a little better when I read that it had to be applied every two weeks. That's my problem with any of the sprays. I can do it once, but I get lazy after that and don't keep up with it. I wonder if the Bitter Apple they sell at Petco to discourage dogs and cats from chewing things they shouldn't might work. Doesn't solve the problem of having to spray all the time. At least here, it doesn't rain so it wouldn't wash off.
In WA, it's legal to feed deer and one old-timer told me his wife fed the deer and they never went near her gardens. My DH is less-than-thrilled with the feed bills for the dogs, birds and feral cats. I can't imagine what he'd say about feeding the deer LOL.

I sprayed it with a product called Hot Pepper Wax. No more eating! I found
the Hot Pepper Wax in the garage, several years old and I can't find any
more.
I have used Liquid Fence since then, but I'm afraid the rain washes it off,
(It does rain up there sometimes.) and the smell is so bad I don't like to
go in the garden myself after I have used it.
