Planting irises in the same location after the iris has been taken out works fine for me. I put soil conditioner and a new potting soil together in the hole with a 5-20-20 fertilizer and get beautiful flowers the following year. I also plant the iris at the top of ground level and cover with small bark to protect from heat and maintain moisture. Haven' t seen any rot in my beds except when the iris gets too far down in the ground.
