I think they are referring to purple loostrife(sp?) which is a noxious, and
I believe introduced, weed which has naturalized in many North American
wetland areas. It competes with and threatens native plant species of many
wetland areas. Gardeners are urged not to cultivate it near wetland areas.
Back to irises now.

My understanding of the memberships is that if one joins October 1st through
December 31, then your membership actually begins the following January 1st.
Joining between January 1 and September 30th means that your membership will
up for renewal at the beginning of the next calendar year.

I joined AIS in May of this year and I received the January and April AIS
bulletins as part of my membership package. It was great to get a couple of
bulletins right off the bat to satisfy my appetite for iris information.
There was also some important information that I might have missed if I had
not received these current year issues of the bulletin. For example, the
1996 symposium was published in the January issue and the April issue had
most of the current years introduction advertisements with some very nice
photos.

Rather than feeling cheated out of a partial year's membership, I've chosen
to make up for lost ground and get my $18.00 worth out of the remaining
months of the year (and the IRIS-L is helping me to that end). :)
AIS isn't just a magazine subscription and the best way to help new members
justify a partial year membership is to make them feel especially welcomed,
needed, and part of your local society.

End of soapbox.

ground to plant my last few TB's)
