Jim Halverson and I have been on the list for a few months. We are in Marin
County in the San Francisco Bay area. Jim is a former alfalfa farmer, I a
former hobby dairy farmer. We have a tiny backyard in a toney neighborhood
which is rapidly filling with TB irises which are mulched with barley straw.
Newcomers arriving at the house are amazed at our mini-ranch in our
obstensibly high class neighborhood. Jim introduced me to irises, and we
now have about 50, with more on order yet.
Jim is a computer programmer. I manage real estate out of our home - so I
can play with the irises at any time during the day. We are currently
looking in Sonoma County for land on which to grow even more irises.
Re alfalfa pellets: If you have room to store and compost it or are willing
to use it as mulch, alfalfa hay is cheaper. Next time I mulch I think I
will use alfalfa hay underneath a "finish" layer of straw (the straw is a
beautiful golden color). The only disadvantage I can think of is that the
hay might not leave the iris enough breathing room around the top of the
rhizome.
Are there other iris list folks in Marin or Sonoma Counties?
