Welcome, glad to see more folks from the bay area. I'm not in Marin but
kinda the opposite end of the bay - Fremont.
Others on the list will probably comment, but my (novice) opinion would be
that hay mulching (of whatever kind) would not be the best. The rhizomes
like to sunbathe, and there is much less chance of rot that way. I have
used the hay mulch technique for years especially with potatoes with great
success, but not with irises.
Jim being a ex alfafa farmer, do you have any guesses where I might be able
to buy alfafa pellets in bulk (yard or 1/2 ton quantities)
