Hello, friends!
Our Fredericksburg Area Iris Society (FAIS) iris sale this past
Saturday was quite successful!!! We always take in a lot of money - but this
time we took in a lot of new members as well!!!
Gleaning from some suggestions here on how to GET and KEEP members
(thanks Bill Smoot, Carolyn Schaffner, et al...), I asked that FAIS do
something to get some of our iris customers to join the AIS. Our eventual
plan was to meet the new members halfway on the cost of membership by
allowing them to pick $10 IN FREE IRIS WITH A PAID $18 MEMBERSHIP. Not sure
of the exact final tally, but we got 20 some new members!!! (Most sales in
recent years have produced very few new members.)
Now, a SERIOUS question:
Is it really true that there is no provision for pro-rating the cost
of AIS membership in place? Please, tell me it ain't so!!! In Toastmasters
International, for example, the membership cost for a new member is different
according to what month the person joins. If you join with 3 months of the
current year left, then you pay for only three months. When dues are
collected for the next year - 3 months later - that person pays for a full
years membership.
Before I get on the "soap box", I just wanted to ask for some
feedback on this issue. Perhaps it is not true... I can't believe that there
is a system in place whereby we will have to ask these new folks for dues
again in just a few months. And I am fearful that we may have mislead them by
saying "a one year membership is only $18" vice "a less than 1/2 year
membership is going to run you $18." Please, tell me it ain't so!!
