I am forwarded this with Jody's permission to the list. I have
found one reference to seaweed in Currier's book, `The Japanese
Iris' as it pertains to mulching NOT fertilizing, P. 40. He
says it is not suitable for JI's as a mulch because it causes
alkalinity. We have very acid soil here - my garden tested at
a ph of 5.7. Jody is about 10 miles from here and I don't know
what the ph of their soil is...
As you will see, Jody does not use just seaweed in this particular
fertilizer.

Hi Ellen.
Very, very interesting note about JI's and seaweed. The brand of stuff I
use is called "Neptune's Harvest Liquid Fish and Seaweed." It is
manufactured by Ocean Crest Seafood, 89 Commercial St, Gloucester, Ma.
01930. I have used it at the rate of about 1/8 cup/gallon of water. The
ingredients listed on the bottle are Fresh North Atlantic Fish and
Seaweed. The analysis states 2% total nitrogen (0.5% water-soluble
nitrogen and 1.5% soluble nitrogen), 3% as available phosphate (P2O5)and
0.5% soluble potash (K2O).
Let me know what you find out....
Jody
