Color arrangement in the garden is strictly a matter of personal taste, but
when I planted my new TB's in my perennial border I tried to envision the
color combinations as well.
I've never seen many of the TB's I planted and only had catalog descriptions
to guide me as to hues and tints. Therefore, I chose the cautious path and
planted colors mixed with whites. I purposely purchased more white
varieties so that I could generously separate the darker colors like blacks,
purples, and reds. I avoided putting two of a similar color next to each
other. Next year when most of them bloom (wishful thinking) I can take
notes and photos, rearrange, and share with friends when I dig and divide.
I also considered the given heights of TB's when I knew them. Otherwise, I
just looked at the general vigor of the rhizomes and fans and placed the
larger ones behind the smaller ones. However, this could be misleading if
you ordered your rhizomes from a distant area and didn't get them locally.
For example, the increases from my Schreiner's TB's from last year are half
the size or less of the original rhizomes even though I've given them
regular water, fertilizer and individual TLC (I haven't tried steroids on
them, yet).
For what it's worth here are the color combinations I would find interesting.
Safe combinations:
Blues and violets with yellows or whites
Reds with whites or yellows
Pinks and oranges with whites
Pinks with light blues
Yellows with whites
More shocking combinations:
Dark purples with oranges or yellows
Blues and violets with oranges
Blacks with oranges or whites
