Several years ago Mr. Holland wrote to me requesting information on how to
register an iris his mother "had grown for years" which was very fragrant. He
also sent a picture which I forwarded to Phil Edinger, identifier extraordinaire
of old iris. In the meantime, Mr. Holland registered SWEET LENA. Phil is
usually busy and it takes a while for him to answer, but in his reply he thought
the iris was one from the late 40's, early 50's as I recall. He named it but I
do not recall now what he said. It was a moot point as the plant had already
been accepted for registration. He was more than a trifle displeased that the
registrar (Kay Nelson) had let someone register an iris that had ALREADY been
registered years ago. Be aware that if you wish fragrance, this may be the way
to go, but in no way is it a modern ruffled iris. Marilyn
