Re: Clay soil

I have to agree with Bill Shear's comments about leaf compost. I grew up
in Piedmont NC where the red clay makes fine bricks. I now live on sandy
loam on Delmarva. When my family asks me about moving back to the
Piedmont, my standard answer is that I do not intend to live on red clay
again. Last week I visited friends and relatives in the Carolinas. My
sister now lives on the farm where I grew up. She has used great amounts
of leaf compost to amend the soil. I had taken her some daylilies and I
lined them out in her vegetable garden until she is able to prepare the
new bed for them. Granted, the soil was not as friable as the loam here,
but it wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered. She "harvests" oak leaves
from 2 acres of mature red and white oaks in the yard, which is
composted and then worked into the gardens. It has really paid off. I
would even consider moving back to red clay--if it were amended.
