Jan,

Frost will damage newly planted rhizomes if they are not
well-established.  We have had high loss rates when planting TBs in late
August and Siberians in late September.  First frost is normally at the
end of October but can occur as soon as late September.  Late plantings
should be mulched with the mulch removed as soon as possible in the
Spring.  We are finding that planting TBs three months (Siberians two
months) before normal first frost virtually guarantees survival -- no
matter where the rhizome comes from.
