And then there is the smart borer.  I could have missed this one except
that I was digging up a piece of HONEY GLAZED (IB) for Barb Jackson.  To
my surprise, the piece I selected came out easily.  There were hardly
any roots on it.  And there lying beside it was the pupa.  The leaves
did not show any of the normal signs of borer and the borer ate only the
bottom side of the rhizome.  Needless to say, I smashed the pupa and dug
another piece of HG for Barb.

So, would we and should we care if the borer only ate a small piece of a
rhizome so that the plant could remain healthy?
