OT: Historic Daylilies.

From: "william b. cook" <billc@atlantic.net>

Since I once mentioned Historic Daylilies, I thought maybe I should
clarify things a little bit. Although as some have said, many Daylily
growers want only the newest and fanciest plants, interest is increasing in
some of the older ones again. This is because they, like Historic Irises,
are often more dependable and more tolerant of neglect.
Historic Daylilies (sometimes called Heritage Daylilies) are often
discussed on the official Daylily e-mail Robin. (One MUST be a member of
AHS to join that one.) Unlike AIS, the AHS has no sections, so there is no
"Historic Daylily Society." But, there is an increasing interest in
preserving the better of the older ones. There is still some question as
to what is a Historic Daylily: 30 years old?, 40 years old?
One of those working on collecting the older Daylilies happens to be
Roger Nelson. I have collected a few of these older plants, but I am
especially interested in finding those introduced by Ophelia Taylor.
I would like to second mentioning Sunnyridge Gardens. They have both
Historic Irises and Historic Daylilies, but are sold out of some of both
for this year. Last week, I contacted them in my search for Ophelia Taylor
Daylilies and struck "Taylor Gold." They had 20 of them, mostly not listed
in the catalog, and were trying to close them out, since they were down to
a plant or two of most of them. They now get to come back to the county
where they were hybridized.
I am sorry for this to be so long, but I wanted to help explain the
status of Historic Daylilies. Sometime, I am hoping a group dedicated to
them can form, not as a rival to AHS or the Historic Iris Preservation
Society, but in cooperation with both.
