I wonder about the great agricultural empire in the South and the
Mississippi Delta, in particular, which is a stone's throw from me. Would
we have a cotton crop, would we have any corn, would we have any soybeans,
would we have a lumber crop? Not without insecticides!
I cannot remember the last time I saw a cotton chopping crew. I
must have been a kid. Weeds are controlled by herbicides applied by crop
dusting airplanes.
The catfish industry with its many ponds of farm-raised catfish
are next to the cottonfields. The catfish industry has expanded and
flourished now for nearly forty years without problems of toxic runoff.
Of course, the aforementioned plants are not grown in home gardens. But,
If somebody didn't do something to contain the iris borer, then all those
beautiful beardless irises from up East would never make it into my
southern garden for me to enjoy.
And, if the chemists had not developed insecticides/pesticides for
the farmer, where would we be?
I believe in freedom of choice and moderation. If a person
chooses not to use any form of pest control, that is his right. And, if a
person chooses to use chemicals within the limits of the law, then he has
the right to do so.
