Re: Daylily Bertie Ferris, etc =^..^=

Good Grief...

Bertie Ferris (hybridized by my old friend Ury Winniford) like it's namesake
originated in south Dallas... Bertie was a great woman who lived to a ripe
old age and an awesome daylily judge for many many years. I always marveled as
I walked with Ury & his shovel on his oversized property behind his house
where he did all his hybridizing and growing of incredible peonies & dayliles. Of
course this was not just his garden. He shared it with his good hybridizing
friends I had the honor & priivilege to know which of course were: Ken &
Virginia Henson as well as Bertie Ferris. Bertie was the widow of Royal Ferris who
helped build huge thoroughfares in Dallas. Hence the name "Royal" Avenue in
Dallas. You can still find bricks commemorating the name of Royal Ferris at
various on ramps in Dallas at the base of a few of the expressways he's
responsible for... including Central Expressway (that's Hwy 75 though Dallas) as
well as the Dallas North Parkway (Tollway)... Yes, the Ferris' were incredibly
wealthy. I was terribly saddened by the deaths within the last 3 to 5 years of
all of them I admired so & had the pleasure to know and stroll through their
gardens with... Bertie Ferris, Ury Winniford, Ken Henson... But this is
daylily talk... Aren't I on the iris robin?????

Anyway... long story short to Mickey Corley in Bethany an entire 2 miles
west of me... Yes! Bertie Ferris & virtually every daylily in existence grows
well & flourishes in OKC (& we're not far south)... Daylilies grow in every
climate imagineable...

Happy New Year to all... Kath in OKC =^..^=
