Hey Chris,

I'm using ordinary flourescents - one cool white and one warm white per
fixture. The lights are actually more supplemental than primary, since
my growing shelves are set up adjacent to a pair of south-facing, glass
doors for my basement walkout. The irises are getting plenty of natural
light in addition to the flourescents.
>Air circulation is equally important
That's more of a problem, but I won't get too concerned about it until
the plants grow a lot more foliage than they have now. If need be, I can
always set up a fan later to move the air around.

Not to worry. I learned from your mistakes. ;-) The irises are in
small, individual pots that the cats find utterly uninteresting. I also
have larger pots of impatiens waiting out winter on the basement floor,
so they will keep any potentially naughty felines well diverted from the
irises.

If by "hairy critters" you mean my iris "lint", I believe my rubbing
alcohol/water/soap spray has dispatched them. If you're referring to the
larger hairy critters whose bodies I am constantly stepping over in my
home, well, they're an entirely more complicated matter. ;-)
Happy New Year,
Laurie
