I see lots of 'archive quality acid-free paper' for sale these days,
various weights from card stock to normal printer paper and various
colors.
What about acid free printer inks? If the acid free paper comes in
various colors, surely there are acid free inks? Or is that such a
specialty item it costs a fortune?
My photos are not archival quality for a photographer, but they are very
helpful in keeping track of what plants look like.
I don't care all that much about the color accuracy. In my experience,
I rarely identify an iris by what color it is, since that can vary so
much depending on the climate, preceeding and current weather, soil, age
of bloom, etc, not to mention the printer/monitor. Color class is
useful (yellowish, mostly purple), pattern is very useful (especially
haft marks), flower form is very useful, pattern of color on the beard
is useful. Photos of any sort, even good black and white, show pattern
and form.
If you read the discussions among folks trying to help identify an
unknown posted to iris-photos, color doesn't get discussed nearly as
much as form and pattern as key ways to tell apart similar iris. I.e.,
"the form on that one is too old/too modern to be...whatever was
suggested".
