Patricia, with the range of irises you grow, Spurias planted in ordinary good
garden soil should thrive I would think. Are you not in the general area of
Wenatchee and Cashmere?
When I lived in Idaho I had a few Spurias and raised some from seed. They
grew, stayed green all summer and once established bloomed and increased
exhuberantly. They're big--so plant them where you have room. Our USDA zone
was warmer than yours, but Spurias are hardy very far north in Europe, so you
should have no problem as long as you irrigate regularly in the summer--same
water requirements as TB's.
I don't remember transplant times--seems to me it made a great deal of
difference when rhizomes were reset. They didn't like being disturbed at the
wrong time as I recall.
Neil Mogensen now in z 7 western NC mountains,
but once in z 6 SW Idaho-Oregon border steppe climate under ample
irrigation--fruits, wine grapes and vegetables, seed crops, onions and
potatoes country
