Ellen, I grew up in the mountain west and have seen temperatures of plus 115
and minus 28, with minus 35 in the outlying areas. But I thought I lived in
the *South!* here. And Chicago has an unfrozen (so far) Lake Michigan to
moderate its temperatures. Moderate?
No wonder the attendance was down at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart--Notre
Dame--in South Bend today. I know, I know---school is out for Christmas
break. But usually the place is packed.
While I'm more or less (less and less, actually) homebound, the Hallmark
channel broadcasts that service and we get it on cable. I didn't see an
overcoat in the place. I guess the New Englanders and folks in the upper
Midwest know how to dress warmly and keep the fire going.
Laurie F remarked about her temps--she's *way* up in the Midwest ( or more the
near Northwest) where the underbrush and the fauna are hardy--very hardy. So
are the survivors--both of people and irises.
Neil Mogensen z 7 western NC mountains--same range as Ellen, just a lot
farther SE.
