RE: HYBD: Broken Colour

While there have been a few "random pattern" plants show up that are much like broken colour I don't know of any that have been introduced. You have had some of these and I have one in my garden. So far they all have been from 'Broken Colour" plants X non plicata so have two genes from the "broken Colour" phenotypes which are all from plicata breeding. That is Broken Colour X plicata. There are some broken colour plants that don't have either parent as a broken colour but they are from plicata breeding. There are numerous examples of a broken colour sporting and producing either part or whole flowers of regular plicata patern. I have a sport from Alpha Gnu ( broken colour) that is regular plicata. A plicata X broken colour gives all plicata offspring and usually some are broken colour but sometimes there are none that have broken colour but are all regular plicata patterns. Ther are two varieties that I know of that are natural sports and may not have any plicata. Namely Kelidescope and Joseph's Coat, both sports of Honorabile a diploid and all now classified as MTB.
While it is possible to have random colour that is not from plicata breeding, the vast majority are.
There are many similar patterns that have different genetic makeups and it is often difficult to make distinctions. Just as some zonals have four sets of plicata genes and some don't , there are some BCs that don't have four plicata genes but most do have according to all the breeding information I have at hand.
