Re: RE: HYBD: Broken Colour

There are other diploids with probably similar ancestry to 'Honorabile'
(ie. 'Keilidescope' and 'Joseph's Coat')that show similar blotched or
broken coloring at least on occasion, and it seems to me that it is usually
on the standards, and involves the pattern of the falls being carried into
the standards (sometimes the other way round though). Sometime it looks as
if the standards are trying to become falls. As I recall the ones I've
seen are all basically amoenas, neglectas, or variegatas of the I.
variegata type of pattern (which is or isn't related to plicata??). Off
hand, I can only think of the names of a few, but I've seen several others.
'Edina' and 'Loreley' often get confused, and another is the "Dinar
Mountains" clone that is sold as I. sambucina (coloring fits the name
squalens better though). Another is one of the old "flat" diploids, but
I'm not able to pull the name out of my head right now. In the "flat" one,
it seems that some of the falls are trying to revert back to standards in
sort of a reverse of what the others look like they are doing.

'Edina' shows what looks to me like plicata influence even in the normal
pattern, and when the Dinar Mountain plant gets broken up, the pattern
sometimes shows as typical plicata on parts of the flower. It doesn't look
to me like exactly the same thing as what is going on in the "typical"
broken pattern flowers of other cultivars, but I could see how it might be
a similar disruption to an I. variegata type pattern, perhaps caused by
genes (perhaps plicata genes?) inherited from the I. pallida side? Perhaps
it is the same thing, but just expressed a bit differently (?and less
consistently) because of the plants being diploid.

Just some thoughts.
