RE: Joan Moritz

 We lost a wife, good friend and mother early this morning.  Fortunately,
the end stage was brief with relatively little suffering.

CLARENDON HILLS, IL - Joan Claire Moritz (nee Betzenderfer), of Clarendon
Hills, died December 20, 2004, at home from esophageal cancer.  Joan was
born in Rice Lake, Wisconsin to the late Walter Betzenderfer and Constance
E. Van Noy on November 22, 1927.



Joan attended the University of Minnesota where she received her bachelor's
degree in Spanish in 1949.  While at the University, she met Donald B.
Moritz, whom she married in 1950, and they raised three children primarily
in Arlington Heights, Illinois before moving to Clarendon Hills, Illinois in
1980.



She is survived by her husband, Don, and their children; Craig (Claire)
Moritz of St. Paul, Minnesota, Pam (Clifford) Johnson of South Bend,
Indiana, and Brian (Nancy) Moritz of Yorkville, Illinois.  Joan is also
survived by six grand-children; Elizabeth, Kimberly, Christopher, Brian,
Laree and Micah and a foster granddaughter, Pauline.



Her love of flowers, irises in particular, defined the last 40 years of her
life as she served in a variety of capacities in the Northern Illinois Iris
Society as well as other gardening groups.  Her garden, which featured
nearly all perennials that were hardy in this climate, was always open to
visitors and was featured in several organized garden walks and an
occasional newspaper article. She also aided in decorative plantings for the
village of Clarendon Hills and the entrance gate to her neighborhood.



She was honored that Marge Hagberg, hybridizer of iris, introduced an iris
named "Joan Moritz" in 1989 and in 2000, Will Bell, hybridizer of day
lilies, introduced a day lily named after her.  She often commented that
with flowers named after her, she would be around long after her death.



Visitation will be from 4-8 pm, Wednesday, December 22, 2004  at Toon
Funeral Home located at 4920 Main Street in Downer's Grove, Illinois.
(630-968-0408) Funeral services will be Thursday, December 23, 2004 at 11
a.m. in the Toon Funeral Home with the Rev. David Alderfer officiating.
Interment will follow at Bronswood Cemetery, Spring Road, Oak Brook,
Illinois.
