Donald; from the references I have seen and my limited experience in Italy, it seems that most bearded irises grow naturally among rocks. Actually that is what attracted me to Iris in the first place. I was and still am a rock gardener. But many alpine plants that grow easily in the northeast and nortwest ( two areas heavy in rock gardeners) do poorly in our burning hot summers. Iris turned out to be one of the few genera that could tolerate our climate. About 15 years ago my garden was well known in the area for its display of SDBs and MDBs among the rock plants, about 2,000. Many Iris people never saw my garden in tall bearded season and some people thought I didn't even grow them. One judge came by during TB season on another mission and was stunned to discover I had a better collection of TBs then he did. But my first love is still the smaller species and hybrids. Unfortunately my many projects have drawn me away from my garden and it now looks like an aged neglected mistress,
but every year I vote to pay it more attention and to get it back to its former glory.
