There are old cemetaries around that have old bearded iris in them.  I don't know how modern bearded iris would do after 50 years of neglect.  These cemetaries have mostly gone back to prairie, but the iris thrive.
Around where I grew up, south central Kansas, there are gardens with a white spuria with yellow signals.  It is a garden plant for mixed borders.  Especially it is good for growing with other plants that need little or no attention.
I have grown both the corn row and the mixed gardens.  I like them both.
