Tailored Iris
Good morning iris lovers: When I first saw the flaring ruffled iris they
knocked my socks off. All through the 90s I collected and replaced old iris with
the rhumba ladies. When I attended the Dallas convention in 2000 I visited a
Farmer's Branch city planting that featured many established plantings of
historic iris, many not well identified. It was as if looking at the older iris
for the first time. The delicate, almost irridescent, coloring of some of
them and the vivid display from afar made possible by the hanging falls told me
that I need some of them in my garden as well as the new beauties which on
close up are more appealing. Two older ones that I still cherished even in my
rage for new are HELEN COLLINGWOOD and DEBBIE RAIRDON. If they were introduced
today would I buy them? Maybe if I saw them in person, so to speak. If I had
to pare down my garden to 50 or so cultivars, they would certainly be among
the keepers.
One modern iris that I wish someone would work with is ROUND TUIT by Tom
Burseen. It is not particularly ruffled, but it is certainly well named as it is
about the roundest iris I have ever seen.
