Re: HYB: seeds germinating

the 1812 batch (Lemon Reflection x All Revved Up). ..... Almost all are some variation on the
same theme with only one being really different than the rest. The 2004 batch produced fall bloomers while the 2005 group
produced summer bloomers. Betty

Betty, just to make sure I understand you - these were seeds from the same pod? Or the same cross on two different years?

If the former, and that tendency holds true at <all>, that's very exciting and big reason to bloom as many of those 2nd year germinants as possible.

Also might be good reason to go ahead and line out later year germinants even if the first year's seedlings were disappointing.

Was the one "really different" one from the first or second year?

Not much to go on yet, but trend here so far is for stronger seedlings in my growing conditions after more chilling cycles and more blues (pinks and yellows first year, purples and neglectas 2nd year).

If I get NOTHING the first year, I usually get NOTHING the second year.

That's usually true here as well. <Usually> nothing in subsequent years, but sometimes that's not true. I suspect the BEHOLD A LADY cross had a few seeds that attempted germination the first year that were killed during one of our up and down temperature spells over the winter and never made it out of the ground. Back when germination was <5% here.

While web surfing, ran across this re: temperature and vernalization:
de-vernalization- exposure (1 day to 1 week) to high temperatures
>(90-95 oF) immediately
after vernalization, which erases the vernalization treatment.

Some of us had wondered about "high" (i.e., >70oF) temperatures stopping germination, but I didn't realize all that chilling could be "undone" by as little as 1 day of heat. Not sure whether or not this generally applies to irises, & since I've had at least one seed germinate in the middle of July here, it apparently doesn't apply to all.
