For any of you who might compare the temperature readings for my area with what I reported below and are wondering whether my thermometer has gone wacky, please note the date the message was sent (i.e., day before yesterday). For whatever reason, it is only appearing in our messages today. -- Griff

Subject: [iris] HYB: sprouts

Just finished planting seeds today -- 2 months later than usual. Imagine my surprise when, opening the winter frame (a mesh-topped enclosure open to the weather), I found two sprouts in a pot left over from a previous year. One has three leaves, the other two, and both are less than 3 inches tall, so I must conclude that they have sprouted during the last couple of weeks. Never had fall sprouts before. The pot was completely shaded, so I moved it to the
opposite wall of the enclosure, where it will get winter sun and warmth
reflected off the wooden wall, and gave it a light covering of pine straw.
The low was 22 last night. It warmed up to 39 today. Plum Wine bloomed today
