TB: HIST: "Root Beer Iris"

From: HIPSource@aol.com

Greetings,

I asked some time back if anyone could identify the heirloom bearded iris
often called the "Root Beer Iris" and some suggestions were received. I
remained unconvinced and, having received a private inquiry, I asked Phil
Edinger, HIPS ID Chairman which iris makes the rounds this garden name. I
wish to enter this answer into the record here.

Phil tells me: "This is ANGELUS (Egleberg, 1937). In an AIS Bulletin from
the early '50s (the article is "Super Iris for $1 or Less"), the author
specifically uses the root-beer reference."

He continues that this is a difficult grower for him in California and
observes that one source which he knows has sold the real item in the past is
Lorraine's Iris Patch in Quincy, Washington. However, the 2000 catalogs are
not out yet and we cannot provide confirmed information about sources at this
time.
