I'll volunteer the following which are performing well for me. Both
older varieties now.
SATAN'S MISTRESS (Seligmann '83). I bought it as an arilbred, but
it was registered as a TB. It may not be described as a black, but as
it grow for me, it definitely belongs in the very dark class. Of all the
irises I grow, I find myself anticipating this one in bloom more than
any other. It's a marvel in color. An exception to the rule, because
the ruby color it exhibits is not usually my favorite color range. It is
a slow, but steady increaser and consistent in producing bloom stalks.
I moved it to the TB beds after the first year. That is where it fits. It
probably has a home here indefinitely.
STUDY IN BLACK (Plough '68). A stronger increaser than SM, with
later bloom and probably somewhat blacker. Holds up well in our dry
heat and consistent in providing blooms. Goes a bit flat in color after
a day or two in our sun than SM, but holds the color well compared to
most blooms.
Neither are especially ruffled blooms, but I tend to prefer more tailored
form, especially on darker blooms. CHERRY SMOKE was mentioned.
It has not yet been a good grower. No increase, no bloom. One of the
slowest to start, but I'm being patient (?). Our climates probably are
similar in reaching high summer temps, but I expect our humidity is
drastically lower than in the Eastern states.
