My experience with LADY FRIEND has not been good, tho it seems to do
well elsewhere in Tennessee. It's an early bloomer (tries to anyway),
and suffers badly from spring freeze damage and subsequent rot.
The reds/browns don't seem to respond the same here - some croak
practically the minute they hit the ground, others thrive, especially
among the older ones (I have several unnamed ones). The ones with a lot
of aphylla ancestry seem to demand the super drainage that my gravelly
soil gives, but don't much like the heat and drought, especially during
bloom season (e.g. PLAY WITH FIRE). PWF does have pretty bloom stalks
tho, & is very reliable here, as long as it is free from competition -
just a bit miniaturized.
