Here is Robert Schreiner, writing about the Schreiner breeding
program, in AIS Bulletin # 196 January 1970:

"One of the breeding breaks to appear in the Schreiner gardens was
BLACK FOREST. Here the principle of combining the best available dark
iris with an infusion of another species, I. aphylla, via DYMIA,
produced a variety that became a keystone for many breeders. A series
of dark irises were developed, of which TUXEDO is perhaps the best in
a long line of this color."

Black Forest (R. Schreiner 44) is Dymia (Shuber 36) X Ethiop Queen
(Schreiner 38). Bob Schreiner always leaves you guessing, a bit.
Dymia (Shuber 36)	is Harmony (Dykes 23) X Crusader (M. Foster
13). Harmony is one half aphylla. The pedigree of Ethiop Queen was
not given in the registration and the question has always been, is
there more here? Either Black Forest STRONGLY expresses the Harmony
aphylla gene pool or there was more lurking behind the other parent.
Phil and Keith laid that speculation to rest with the pedigree of
Ethiop Queen which has no recorded trace of aphylla. The bottom line
is that the percentage of aphylla in the blacks is very small but in
some cases strongly expressed. If the Craigs' line of aphylla talls
works out, it truly will be a new direction.

But Bob Schreiner hinted at far more in his Bulletin # 196 article.
The background of Stepping Out has always been unrecorded. Here is
Robert Schreiner's words on that:

"The plicata STEPPING OUT, in turn, again follows the same path, use
of an early diploid, the dark French variety, HELAINE, raised to the
tetraploid status, and then mated with others of the plicata strain."

Keith and Phil have narrowed the pathway to Stepping Out down to four
possible scenarios. The daunting -- and exciting possibility is: can
it be reliably winnowed down to one path?
