I have always used a little clorox and sprite to keep my flowers fresh.
Clorox to keep the bacteria down and Sprite to provide citric acid and
sugar. Of course the ends capilliaries tend close down after a couple of
days anyway,  so trim a half an inch or so off the end of the stems and
the flowers will last a long time.
