Usually I feel I have to keep out of discussions of iris books because I
have one on the market--but Anner is quite right about the Kohlein book.
It's not for beginners and for the reasons she states so lucidly has to be
taken with one of those large blocks of salt set out in pastures for
cattle. That having been said, for the experienced irisarian it is a very
valuable resource, particularly the genetics chapters by Dr. Werckmeister.

My own book is aimed specifically at novices, slanted for American
gardeners, and has a short chapter on the fundamentals of hybridizing (how
to do it, but no genetics).

THE WORLD OF IRISES is an entirely different book, very much a handbook of
irisology (if there is such a word) as it was some decades ago. But almost
all of it still applies. The histories of the development of the various
colors and forms of TBs are invaluable documents--but a great deal has
happened since the publication of the book. In short, this too would be my
recommendation to the SERIOUS novice, but with the caveat that an updated
version (long said to be in the works) will add much of great value.
