and has a scorched look. It is not confined to one iris bed or even to a
specific area within a bed. The affected plants may be entirely surrounded
by healthy growing plants. It also is not confined only to the beardeds. On
my original clump of spurias, about 1/8 of the entire clump is doing the same
thing.... It is occurring also on one LA. ...... I can't determine any
pattern. Affected plants range from being established for several years in
the same location (even one of the old grandmothers!) to newly acquired
rhizomes and to some clumps divided last fall. On these last, again not
every rhizome seems affected. The new fan growth on those which have
exhibited these symptoms the longest is no longer coming out looking healthy.
Their color is not too bad, with only a touch of yellow, but they have a
wilted look and feel to the touch and they are not growing well. I can't see
anything wrong.... The roots, though, are clearly languishing and dieing
away with not much sign of any new root nodes. Frustrating.>>>

Donald, I imagine you have had private responses on this but I haven't
noticed any on-list acknowledgment of your post.

Frankly what you are describing sounds like Scorch as defined in The World of
Irises. If the central leaves are discoloring but the rhizome is firm and
investigation reveals that the roots are disintegrating, that may be it. See
the Archives for more information. Be aware that there are also said to be
mysterious ailments that look like it but aren't, and that real Scorch is a
disease of bearded irises. It is not known
whether similar symptoms seen in beardless irises have the same cause. The
cause is basically unknown and one theory has to do with stress, which I
believe your irises will have seen a lot of recently. The bad news is one can
loose a lot of scorched plants, the good news is that it isn't thought to be
contagious.

I'm sure we are all sorry your irises are sick and hope they will be better
soon.
