I would suggest diversifying your iris selection as much as possible, in
order to extend bloom season. The smallest bearded iris (miniature
dwarfs and standard dwarfs [despite Tolkien, I can sometimes remember
not to call them dwarves]) bloom, at least in some places, well before
their taller kin. Various beardless kinds also bloom either before or
after beardeds. Most pertinant to your question below, spurias tend to
bloom late.

BTW, Ben was IMNSHO the most versatile of recent hybridizers. He won
major awards in almost all classes of iris.
