AIS:Judge Types Over the Years

I picked off the shelf a few January issues of the AIS Bulletin
and looked up the judges section. Here are the types:

January, 1963

Garden judge
Exhibition judge
Senior judge
Honorary judge

These categories are not explained and it does not say what each can
do. Apprentices were not listed, nor were abbreviations used. You
had to look at the type of print (italics, bold, caps) to figure out
who was what. * indicated exhibition judges.

January, 1975

(G) Accredited judges may judge shows individually or as a part of a
panel.

(A) Apprentice judges may only serve in a judging capacity as
apprentices under the tutelage and supervision of Accredited Judges.

(S) Senior (nothing stated)

(H) Honorary judges are fully accredited and may function the same as
Accredited Judges, but should be consulted as to their availability.

January, 1979 (called Winter)

The information is the same as in 1975, but (E) for exhibition has
been dropped.

So sometime between 1975 and 1979, exhibition judges were phased out.

In the '63 issue there were more E judges, but it was interesting to
note that some regions had no E judges at all while others had quite
a few. By 1975, the E judges had dwindled significantly.

Some other changes:

H's in the early days were mainly appointed but had full voting
rights. Later H came to mean what Emeritus (E) means today. A judge
who has gone through all of the categories and has been honored for
their service with the designation of E. They can still perform
(vote/judge) if they so desire.

S is now AM (active master) or RM (retired master).

G is confusing even today. It still means garden. I though it had
been dropped and replaced with accredited, but the word garden
appears in the current listing in the Bulletin. I don't think the
term garden judges is described in the new JT manual. These judges
can also judge shows.
