Patti there has been a lot of discussion of this topic here over the
years.  You are definitely not alone in drying them first.

I never have dried any on purpose, but have accidentally dried a few
sometimes by not getting around to planting right away.  I checked on a
few rhizomes that had been lost under some junk on the porch for a year
and a half, finally in the ground late last fall.  Several died, several
have grown like weeds.  I think one is pallida & some were IMMORTALITY,
but labels are long lost - will have to wait till they bloom.
