Re: CULT: starting rz's off in pots in Summer

There seem to be as many variables in this, as well as in other aspects of iris culture. For the past 2 years I have started all my new iris in pots (have had great success in getting them started with a good root system) set right out in the sun (all day) on my concrete driveway. It gets into the high 80s and into the 90s regularly, but as long as I water every couple days they do wonderfully. AND I never bother to water any other way than the easy, lazy way: right from the top. As long as the pots have drain holes so the excess water can just run away I have no qualms about doing it that way, and I've never had one rot.
Relative to the "proneness to rot" issue, though that's not really covered in my heading, the matter of variables seems to hold just as true. It seems to be so much a matter of soil type, drainage, weather, shade, and lots of other things, that no list of what rots for one person has much validity for somebody else, especially in a different area.
